Fluffy Springs Saga
Chapter 19

Wednesday, September 15

The little white filly continued down the dirt road the nice misters had called ateeate and the trip was uneventful for several bright times. She would find green plants to eat every so often, with water here and there that she could drink from. It was getting late in the year but there were still enough occasional greens to eat. The grasses had all turned tan but still gave a bit of nourishment for her. At night, she found something to crawl under to sleep away the night.

She kept an eye out for barky monsters and an eye to the sky for any wingie monsters that might try to get her again. But for the most part, it was a lonely trip. Her initial excitement at being at the shortcut to Fluffy Springs was all the enticement she had needed to continue on at a brisk pace. But, lately, she was starting to think back. To her mother, Sprucie, to all the pain and suffering she had been through with her mother. Then she would think of all the little babies that Sprucie had, her brothers and sisters, who were all now forever sleepies. This would cause her to have to stop, find a safe hidey hole, and have a good cry.

Eventually, her sobs would subside, and she would continue her journey with the hope that when she got to Fluffy Springs and all the happy fluffies that lived there, she would find happiness.

Instead, she stumbled across Hanbune. A small town roughly halfway between Tennat City and Harvey Springs, where Fluffy Springs was rumored to be located. The dirt road she was following came into town and intersected the only paved road in town that went north and south. She wasn't inclined to stay around but she smelled a familiar scent that she'd only picked up on a couple of times during her trip.

Other fluffies.

She was feeling particularly sad that day and wanted to have at least a little interaction with some of her own kind. It should have been easy to find them but it was proving much more difficult than she had imagined.

There were several rundown buildings that white felt would be great hidey holes for the family she was looking for. She knew it was a family from the various piles of shit she had found in one spot. Not a domestic herd, since all the poopies weren't in one place, as if there were an imaginary litter box waiting for them. She knew there were foals from the small piles and at least one adult from the big piles. They seemed happy enough as she didn't find any sprays of sorry poopies nor any scaredy poopies. But where were they?

She finally found them on the south end of town. They were in a small yard with a fence surrounding it, all eating the succulent grass. It seemed to be a large herd but newly formed. A stallion with four mares, one of which was very pregnant were quietly munching the lawn. She looked at the little house that the fence was attached to and saw a very tall house built on top of it. It was all white, too. It looked old and she saw lots of patches on it, just like the rest of the little town.

White walked to the fence near one of the grazing mares, a light pink with yellow mane.

HEWWO. BE NYU FWIEND? went the little white filly pushing her nuzzle up against the fence.

The light pink fluffy looked up and skipped over to the newcomer.

HEWWO, FWIEND! said the pink fluffy. WHEWE FWUFFY COME FWOM?

White pointed back towards where she had walked from. FWUFFY FWOM DAT WAY.

The pink fluffy turned and looked, waiting for something else to come of it. Nothing did. She turned back around to talk to her new friend.

FWUFFY NAME AM WEMONADE. WHAT AM WHITE FWUFFY NAME?

She thought for a bit, but she didn't have a name. FWUFFY NO HAB NAME. WHEWE FWUFFY FIND NAME?

Lemonade giggled. MUMMAH AN' DADDAH GIB YOU NAME! WHEWE AM MUMMAH AN' DADDAH?

The little fluffy hung her head. NO HAB DADDAH. AN MUMMAH NO WIKE NO-PWETTY FWUFFY.

Lemonade cocked her head at an angle. FWUFFY AM PWETTY. WHY MUMMAH SAY FWUFFY NO AM PWETTY?

She shook her head. NO KNOW.

Lemonade ate some more grass. She pondered the fluffy in front of her.

White finally spoke up. WEMONADE HEWD NEW?

The pink fluffy giggled. NO AM HEWD! AM FAMIWY! DAT AM SISSY FWUFFY. AM GWAPE, she said pointing at the pregnant purple fluffy with the darker purple mane. She moved her hoof to a bright red fluffy with a dark purple mane. DAT AM OTHUH SISSY, PUNCH. Lemonade looked around, then pointed to the deep dark red fluffy with a nearly matching mane. SISSY OVEW DEWE AM WINE. DEN GWAPE SPESHUH FWIEND DEWE, pointing to the lone stallion in the yard, another red fluffy with a light pink mane, AM CWIMSON.

Lemonade then looked at the foals playing in one corner of the yard. DOSE AM GWAPE AN' CWIMSON FUHST BABBEHS, AM MATO AN' AM BUNNY AN' AM BEWWY AN' AM COIN AN' AM DONKEE. DEY AM NO MOWE MIWKIE BABBEHS AN' GWAPE AM SOON MUMMAH ‘GAIN.

That was the understatement of the century. The mare was swollen almost to the point where she couldn't walk, resembling her namesake fruit.

Lemonade went back to talking directly at the white fluffy again. FWUFFY WAN NUM GWASSIES? AM GOOD! MUMMAH SAY HAB FUN OUT IN GWASSIES.

White nodded and the new pair of friends walked around the fence but like any good barrior there was no way in for a feral fluffy. The pair were a little dejected so struck up the conversation again.

WEMONADE HAPPY FOW NEW FWIEND! NO WOTS OF FWUFFIES AM AWOUND.

White asked, CWIMSON GIB WEMONADE SPESHUH HUGGIES?

Lemonade laughed. NO! CWIMSON AM GWAPE SPESHUH FWIEND. Then she grew sad. WEMONADE NO FIND SPESHUH FWIEND.

White nodded. SO, WHY AM FWUFFIES IN FENCIE?

The pink fluffy's eyes lit up. OH! MUMMAH MAWWOWY SAY AM BIG SEWAH MONY! JUS' FOW FWUFFIES! SAY NEW ENISHEATE COMING! MUMMAH SAY FWUFFY FAMIWY AM VEWY SPESHUH! FWUFFIES NEED STAY IN YAWD SO NO GET WOWSTEST OWIES FWOM BAD MUNSTAHS! WOOK! DEWE MUMMAH NOW!

An old lady was standing in the doorway, dressed in elaborate white and gold robes. She called out to them. "Okay, little ones! It's time to come in! Time for the ceremony" Lemonade got very excited! MUMMAH SAY WE GET SEWAH MONY, DEN BE VEWY HAPPY! Then she looked back at her new friend. CAN WHITE FWUFFY GET IN?

White nodded. She had seen a door while coming around the building at the first and figured she could get in that way.

YAY! NEW FWUFFY FWIEND COME TO SEWAH MONY! SEE NEW CWEW SADAH! and Lemonade scurried up the stairs of the old building following her family into the darkness. The door closed behind her. The yard was quiet once again. White walked back towards the front, listening through the open windows along the side to her new friend and the family happily babbling as they followed Mother Mallory through the middle of the old church.

YAY! TIME FOW SEWAH MONY! she heard one exclaim who wasn't Lemonade.

Another chimed in, CWIMSON AM EXCITED! AM SEWAH MONY HAB SKETTIES?

"No, sorry, little one. No spaghetti. This is to save you. It will separate you from the demons."

GWAPE AM SOON MUMMAH! FANK YOU, MUMMAH MAWWOWY, FOW SCAWE AWW DE MUNSTAHS. GWAPE WUV BABBEHS AN' NO WUV MUNSTAHS.

"Here we are. Now, you three, need to go into this."

NO! NO WIKE UPSIES!

WHY PUT GOOD FWUFFIES IN SOWWY BOX!? AM GOOD FWUFFY!

"Sorry, but we need to keep you safe! Grape and Crimson, come here to the altar. Yes, you all as well, little ones. All the foals, I need you to line up here while I get your mother and daddy prepared. That's good! You're such good fluffy babies!"

Her tone turned a little gruffer. "Recruit, please take those three to the kitchen, then come back with one of your choosing. That will be the practice fluffy for the eviction."

A young man's voice came next, "Yes, Mother Mallory, I obey for the crusade." White heard her friend Lemonade wailing with her sisters. It sounded like a cardboard box they were pawing at. She had to hurry!

The first door on the side was closed fast, and she saw a man walk into the little room and put the box up on a table. He looked inside for a short time then at the dark red fluffy, Wine. "You're up!" he said, and carried the fluffy back through the hallway that she could barely see through big window of the small room. The two fluffies left in the box cried. What was going on!? She could now hear a lot more crying as she made the corner and the long part of the building stretched before her.

She heard the dam, Grape, through the windows.

WHY WEGGIES NO WOWK? PWEASE WET GWAPE DOWN!

Crimson was in distress as well.

WET SPESHUH FWIEND GO! NO WIKE AWTAW! SPESHUH WUMPS AM COWD!

"Quiet, little ones. It will be done soon enough." she said in a sing-song voice. Then back into the gruff tone, "Recruit, restrain the practice fluffy, then come help with the foals. Be sure the bindings are tight. We do not want any runaways."

"Yes, Mother Mallory."

She was getting further away and couldn't hear what the two humans were saying inside the building. But she heard the screams.

NO! NO WIKE! BIGGEST OWIES!

HUU HUU HUU!

WHY GIB SISSY OWIES!? PWEASE! NO!

WEGGIES! WEGGIES HAB BIGGEST OWIES!

She was running as fast as she could. But she couldn't see anything! White made it in to the front door that was propped open with a little wood blockie just in time to see the man holding Wine up by the tail, and Mother Mallory talking to him. He nodded and walked back through a door on the left side, dropping Wine's limp body into a trash can. She ducked behind one of the large benches and peeked around the corner. The family continued to cry but she couldn't see any of them. The man came back with another fluffy but it wasn't Lemonade.

She heard Punch crying about leggie hurties and she made her way as fast as she could down the side of the building where she saw him come from. Maybe Lemonade was there still!

"Very good, recruit. This is why we practice. Let me save us a little time, and get the fluffy back to where you were."

SCREEEE!

NO! PWEASE WET PUNCH GO! NO HUWT SISSY!

SCREEEE!

"There we are, Recruit. You may continue with the eviction."

"Yes, Mother Mallory."

SCREEE!

"Very good, Recruit. Now, recite the levels, and continue with the procedure."

"Yes, Mother Mallory."

White ran between the pews.

"A Recruit becomes an Initiate. With skills, the Initiate becomes a Potter with which to work upon the clay that man has brought to life. Once mastered, the Potter elevates to Squire and hones technique."

SCREEE! SCREEE!

"Once sharpened, the Squire becomes a Bearer, and begins to shoulder the load. Once strengthened, the Bearer is now a Charger, with the strength of many. With the knowledge that comes from practice, the Charger ascends to Defender."

Another set of pews fell behind the white filly. She was at the last.

SEE PWACES! WHY!?

"With defense, the spirit of the Defender arises to Knight, and also bears the duty to find the Recruits. A leader among all, the High Knight plows the field so that others may grow."

WHY?! SCREEE! BIGGEST OWIES! PWEASE STOP! HAB BIGGEST HEAWT HUWTIES!

The man hesitated.

"Do not listen to the demon, Recruit. Continue."

White ran past the trash can where the remains of Wine lay, into the cheaply tiled hallway, and to the kitchen. She could see the table and the box above, with Lemonade softly crying inside. The voices from behind her drifted into the small room.

SCREEE!

"Up on high, the Knight Commander bears the weight of all above. To suggest and advise, to watch and protect."

WAN DIE. WAN DIE.

White was in a frenzy! She needed to get to Lemonade. The rest of the family... was heartbreaking. But she felt that no fluffy would disagree that being able to save one rather than none was a good thing. She looked around but all she saw was the white painted cabinets, the table legs, and a small door along one wall. She thought maybe she could bring a branch in and so tried the door but the screens were tight. The door latch was too high for her to reach.

She scurried back pressing herself as tight against the cabinets as she could, trying to see up onto the table. Maybe something there would help. She still couldn't see much so she reared up on her back legs, using the cabinets behind her as support.

The young man walked in. "Let's see... let's see...." and white froze. He looked around on the table top, then went to the door and opened it. He pulled out a mop, a broom, and a small step stool. While his back was turned, she silently landed her front hooves back on the linoleum of the well-worn floor and was under the table before he turned around. She stood at the back of the leg furthest from the human, eyes intently watching him. His hands were solid red. That realization made her heart double in speed.

He stood up and walked to where white had been straining to see the top of the table not a handful of heartbeats before. She circled the table opposite him, as he looked in each cabinet, both above and below the counter top. He reached the end, not finding what he was looking for.

"How can they not have any? That would seem to be a basic necessity," he said, mumbling to himself. He stood at the screen door, and looked across the street. "I wonder..." he said, unlatched the door as he pushed it open, letting it bang loudly behind him. This upset Lemonade once again.

HUU HUU HUU! WHY AM FWUFFIES HAB OWIES? WHY WEMONADE IN SOWWY BOX? HUU HUU HUU! WAN SISSY AN' SISSY AN' SISSY AN' SISSY SPESHUH FWIEND AN' AWW BABBEHS. HUU HUU HUU!

White was euphoric at her good luck! She pushed the step stool that had been locked away in the closet to the table and climbed higher than she ever had before. Even the debris around the little fallen down building that was her mother Sprucie's hidey hole never got this high. Her heart felt like it was going to explode, and had she been any less of a survivor, hardened by her trials, that wouldn't have been a mere literary device.

WEMONADE! she called, WEMONADE! FWUFFY AM HEWE!

The pink fluffy inside stopped crying. WHITE FWUFFY?

YES! AM WEMONADE OKAY? HAB HUWTIES?

NO! NO HUWTIES! HOW AM WEMONADE GET OUT FWOM SOWWY BOX?! PWEASE HEWP!

White was looking around for something, anything to get her friend out from the box, when the man entered again holding a can. He headed straight for the hallways and back towards the main area of the building. He stopped at the trash can, pulled the pop top, and walked back into the sanctuary with the now open can of cheap canned pasta.

The little filly finally had an idea. WEMONADE! COME DIS SIDE! and she tapped on the long end of the box. NOW! JUMP UP AN' GWAB TOP OF BOX! She saw two little hooves struggle to remain on the edge, and she jumped as hard as she could from her side. With the weight of two fluffies, the box tipped over and the two fillies spilled out onto the table.

HUWWY! said white, DOOW AM OPEN! and she ran down the little step stool onto the floor. Her friend followed, but tripped on the last step, landing with a thud on her back.

HUU HUU HUU! she cried, BACK HAB OWIES!

Then from the hallways came the desperate echoes of a fluffy mother, louder than any screams that had come before.

NO! WHY HUWT BABBEHS!? AM ONWY WITTEW BABBEHS! NO TAKE SEE PWACES! WHY?! WHY!?!

White made a run for the door. Her friend who had turned over now, was not. She was headed to her family. White rushed in front of her, speed gained from travelling for so long and far. NO! WEMONADE! NO WOOK! PWEASE... NO WOOK.

But the fluffy had to. She walked to the entry way and looked over to her family, tears in her eyes.

Her eyes were met by the unblinking eyes of a nephew. Or a niece. Which one, she couldn't say.

It's hard to tell fluffies apart when they reach that level of disassembly.

A sharp yank on Lemonade's tail and she was back inside the hallway, frozen at the sight of what she just saw. She kept moving too, as white was pulling her backwards by her tail as hard as she could.

Tears fell from her eyes, mouth open in a silent scream for the baby she had just seen look straight at her. Then the full scene exploded into her mind. That was just one. The other children of her sister hadn't been looking at her, but they were all the same color now.

The red of flesh. Unblinking faces. Still and silent.

White saw a light pink blur and was now being pulled along towards the door by Lemonade. She managed to ski to the right as a fountain of feces erupted from the anus of the fully engaged friend took flight towards the freedom of the screen door. She let go of the lemon yellow tail and ran beside the terrified biotoy, both hitting the screen door at the same time, slamming it into the outside wall. It wasn't too many hoof falls before white had to slow down a lot as her friend didn't have the stamina that she herself had built up over a lifetime of walking and running to keep up, and keep away.

White began to lead the slower friend toward the west and the slowly setting sun.

PencilWingie: @Anonymous: More of a social club. You know, get together, have some drinks, and discuss the news of the day. Maybe shoot pool. The side story coming next discusses their slapstick hijinks and vaudevillian routines. Also, they were first discussed way back in Chapter 4. History repeats itself sometimes.

Anonymous2: As pencilwingies muse, we are planning on a climactic showdown at fluffy springs between apples group and the springs fluffies. All I can say is that for Sprucie, the ponies will need to look East for her coming on the first light of the fifth day. She will have her face painted in William Wallace war paint and will herself be riding Shadowfax (whites name). So is has been written, so it shall be.
