Fluffy Springs Saga
Chapter 27

Friday, October 22

The white filly awoke with a start. By the position of the sky ball, it hadn't been long that she’d napped, and the heat of the day was still about. She stretched then stood up, looking around the tree she was under. There was no brown fluffy about so she shook her head to get the images out of her head. She sipped from the little puddle of water. White looked around the little area she was in, walking around the tree trunk.

STUPID SWEEPY TIME PICTU... and nearly ran into Acorn. He was standing just outside the drip line of the spruce tree shaded by some tall bushes. She reached a hoof out towards him slowly to see if he'd disappear and as his eyes crossed watching the hoof come closer, she touched him softly on the nose.

WHAT AM FWUFFY DOIN? he asked, no longer looking at the white hoof and instead looking straight at her.

She pulled her hoof back quickly, embarrassed. THOUGHT MAYBE FWUFFY WAS SWEEPY TIME PICTUWE. WANTED TO SEE IF FWUFFY GO 'WAY WHEN GIVEN SOWWY HOOFIES.

He sighed. ACOWN AM WEAW FWUFFY. NOW, DEWE AM FWUFFY WANT TO TAWK TO YOU.

She looked around but didn't see anybody. FWUFFY AM WEADY. WHEWE AM FWUFFY?

Acorn ignored her.

WHAT DOES APPEW FWUFFY WOOK WIKE?

She looked at the brown inquisitor with her head cocked to the side. APPEW AM WED WIF WIGHT BWOWN MANE AND TAIW. WIKE OWD APPEW DAT NO TASTE GOOD. DEN, HE HAB WHITE DOTS ON HEAW PWACES. WOTS OF DOTS.

Acorn waited, staring straight ahead, then asked another question.

WHAT AM APPEW SAY DO TO FWUFFY SPWINGS HEWD?

The white mare retold her story of Apple's decision to finish off the Fluffy Springs herd, you know, the one back in Chapter 14? Yeah. That one. It took a while.

WHY WHITE FWUFFY TWY SABE FWUFFY SPWINGS HEWD? NO AM WHITE FWUFFY’S HEWD.

White scuffed the ground with a hoof absently. NO KNOW. FWUFFY JUS’... WAN HEWP. MUMMAH SAY GO FWUFFY SPWINGS. MUMMAH'S MUMMAH, HUMAN MUMMAH, SAY FWUFFY SPWINGS AM GOOD PWACE. SAFE PWACE. BIG HUMAN HOUSIES NO AM SAFE. AM WOTS OF HEAWT HUWTIES AT BIG HUMAN HOUSIES. SPWUCIE'S MUMMAH SAY KEWWIE WIBE NEAW FWUFFY SPWINGS. WAN SEE HUMAN MUMMAH. BUT... WAN HEWP FWUFFY SPWINGS.

AM FWUFFY SMAWTY FWUFFY?

White pondered the question. WHAT AM SMAWTY FWUFFY?

Acorn stood there, listening to something other than her as revealed by the slight occasional nod to nothing in particular. He was talking back too, she could finally tell, more quiet than she could hear, and yet she was so close! A new line of questioning opened up.

WHEWE AM FWUFFY DADDEH AN’ MUMMAH? Acorn asked, his head skewed slightly, as if that was his question too.

White hung her head and looked away from the brown fluffy. FWUFFY NO KNOW FWUFFY DADDEH. MUMMAH NEBAH SAY. TOO MANY SPESHUH FWIENDS. MUMMAH BACK AT HUMAN PWACE. BIG HOUSIES. The image of her mother in the alley flashed in her mind but she didn't know why. Rocks weren't nummies.

Acorn nodded silently. HOW OWD AM WHITE FWUFFY?

White looked up to the sky thinking hard. How old was she? How to measure that in fluffy terms? She did the best she could come up with.

WHITE FWUFFY AM FOUW BIG DAWK TIME SKY BAWWS.

Acorn didn't seem to parse the question with any difficulty. BIG HUMAN HOUSIE FWUFFIES HAB WOTS OF BABBEHS AFTAH ONE DAWK TIME SKY BAWW. WHEWE AM WHITE FWUFFY BABBEHS?

She was taken aback. Babies? Her babies? It never occurred to her that she didn’t have a special friend or foals.

DON' KNOW. JUS’... NO HAB BABBEHS.

If a fluffy could look embarrassed, Acorn did now. The next question came out stilted and broken.

WHITE FWUFFY... UH... KNOW... SPESHUW HUGGIES... GIB BABBEHS TO PWETTY MAWES...

White snapped her head up. FWUFFY NO AM DUMMAH! FWUFFY KNOW HOW FWUFFY GET TUMMY BABBEHS.

Acorn was now having a heated argument in near silence with the hidden one. His tail swished back and forth in agitation.

FINE, he let slip in a non-quiet voice but quickly recovered and focused. DOES... WHITE FWUFFY... UH... HAB SPESHUW FWIEND? WHO GIB SPESHUW HUGGIES... and then slipped back into angrily talking silently to the air.

FWUFFY NO HAB SPESHUH FRIEND. Acorn visibly relaxed at that point as she continued. NO SEE WHY HAB SPESHUH FWIEND. JUS’... NO HAB SPESHUW FWIEND.

Acorn relaxed more. WHY FWUFFY NO NUM SKETTIES?

White thought a bit on it. Why hadn’t she eaten them? They smelled delicious! She paused for a long time before coming to an answer.

FWUFFY NO SEE SKETTIES BEFOWE... AN' SMEWW WIKE BESTEST NUMMIES... BUT... and her mother appeared in her head and that killed off any hesitation.

BUT SKEETIES AM SPWUCIE NUMMIES AN' NO WANT TO BE WIKE SPWUCIE MUMMAH. MUMMAH DO WOTS OF NO GOOD FINGS. NO WANT BE WIKE DAT.

With that the hidden questioner rose up from his hiding place. He was even larger and a deeper brown than Acorn.

THANK YOU, ACOWN. THAT'S ENOUGH FOR THE LITTLE WADY. WHITE FLUFFY, I AM OAK. I MAKE SURE THE HEWD AM SAFE, AN' YOU HAB PASSED SEVERAL TESTS JUST NOW. He looked to Acorn.

ACOWN, YOU CAN RETURN TO POINT. The smaller brown fluffy ducked into the bush and disappeared before her eyes.

Oak looked to her again. COME WHITE FLUFFY. COME TALK TO FLUFFY SPWINGS HERD? SKY WANTS TO TAKE A LOOK AT YOU CWOSE UP.

The white fluffy was stunned. Fluffy Springs? She had made it?! She nodded her head vigorously.

YES! FWUFFY WOUWD WUB SEE FWUFFY SPWINGS!

Oak nodded, but not at her. Four more brown fluffies suddenly rose from around the little talking place and stationed themselves on her flanks! She looked at them but none of them looked at her. They were focused outwards, upwards, and behind. Where had they come from?!

Oak turned towards the little dirt path. OAK WILL BE NEAW, BUT FOR NOW, FOLLOW ACOWN. HE WILL TAKE YOU TO FLUFFY SPWINGS. Oak walked a little bit up the path, ducked into a bush without ruffling a single leaf then became invisible. White stood there for a little bit before Acorn cleared his throat. He was up the path already and looking at her to follow. She started forward. The other four brown fluffies started as well, keeping pace with her and keeping formation.

She caught up to Acorn and the question shot out. WHAT DA FWUFF AM GOIN' ON?!

Acorn shook his head. NO QUESTIONS. WE HAB GO NEAW BIG FWAPPY MUNSTAH HOUSIES. NOT GOOD FOW FWUFFIES. NO TAWKIES UNTIW ACOWN SAY OKAY TO MAKE NOISIES. OKAY?

White nodded, and with that, her four brown escorts spread out and disappeared in the underbrush. She stood there a little bit and realized that if she knew where to look she could see the ones to her sides. The ones behind her though were invisible.

Acorn nodded and moved forward. Silently, they wove a path not far from the dirt path that lead along the mountain side. White realized that every step was under a bush, or a tree, cover she had desperately wished she had several times along her trip. He stopped several times, so she followed his lead. She was barely aware of the other fluffies with the two in the open, and got the feeling several times that it wasn't just those four but almost double that number. If that was true or not, she never knew.

After a long walk, with the sky ball getting close to going to bed, Acorn stepped out from the bushes and back onto the dirt path. WHITE FWUFFY AM OKAY TO TAWK NOW. BIG FWAPPY MUNSTAH HOUSIES AM FAW AWAY NOW.

The white fluffy's head buzzed with questions she’d been holding back on.

ACOWN, WHY AM... but was cut off by him laughing.

SIWWY FWUFFY! I SAY TAWK, NOT ASK MOWE QUESTIONS. TIME FOW ACOWN QUESTIONS AM NO MOWE.

BUT WHY?

They got to a little rise on the path and could see down into a valley of sorts.

BECAUSE FWUFFY AM AT FWUFFY SPWINGS!

She ran up beside Acorn to get a better view. The little valley spread out before her. There was a big housie then lots of little housies just the right size for a fluffy! She could see trees filled with apples and little bushes filled with nummy balls. Little foals played games under and around everything! A stream wound its way through the meadow, with little bridges across it all over the place. Big bushes and trees surrounded the valley on all sides and she could see adult fluffies walking around!

ACOWN! FWUFFY SPWINGS SO PWETTY! she exclaimed but no reply came. The white filly looked to where he should be, but he was gone. Disappeared again! She spun back along the path to try to find him by scanning the vegetation.

Instead, a solid blue fluffy, blue with a blue mane, was seated and watching her from a bit behind the vantage point. He sat up and walked up to her.

HELLO, LITTLE ONE. MY NAME IS SKY. WELCOME TO FLUFFY SPRINGS.

CwinicawDepwession: Good shit, just finished rereading everything up til now. The first time through I didn't catch the fact that Sprucie ended up eating all but one of her first litter, couple of other little things I missed too that were nice touches

FosterFluffy: I can't get enough of slowly uncovering the inner workings of Fluffy Springs. Truly the most remarkable fluffies.

PencilWingie: @CwinicawDepwession: I wrote the damn thing and I keep finding surprises! One of the reasons I held back until it was finished. Too many things I discovered at the end that I then put at the beginning that made things more interesting. The week before I started posting these, I realized the white fluffy had actually met her father without realizing it. And no, it's not Apple.

Fogfactor: > NO QUESTIONS

I would have used "No askies", questions feels like a too-long word for a fluffy
