Fluffy Springs Saga
Chapter 29

Friday, October 22

White sat at her little pile of nummies slowly eating what she was given and watched the other fluffies eat. The adult fluffies were paired up with maybe a single foal bouncing around them. “Foals” wasn't quite the right name. These were all almost adult fluffies, like herself, from what she could tell, standing just a bit below their parent's shoulders. The young played about with their food, getting little bops from the parents when they got too rambunctious. More than once, the white fluffy nearly choked on some food while watching the antics of the foals.

Then she started to weep. Tears dripped into the soil so she refocused on her meal. It didn't go unnoticed by Sky.

ARE YOU OKAY, WHITE FLUFFY? he asked.

She nodded. AM OKAY. JUST... SO MANY HAPPY FWUFFIES. HAB HAPPY HEAWT HUWTIES. NEBAH SEEN SO MANY HAPPY FAMIWIES.

Sky looked on sagely before speaking. I HAVE HEARD THAT IT IS HARD OUT THERE. I AM SORRY. I WISH YOU HAD KNOWN A BETTER LIFE.

She wiped her face and turned her attention to the food. Looking around, trying to actually swallow the food rather than spray it, she started seeing more of how things were organized. There were many fluffies grouped together, off to the side of the families she had been watching. She could tell that they were all grown fillies and colts but none seemed to have children of their own. They stayed mostly with their own, colts talking to colts, and the fillies talking loudly with each other.

Another revelation dawned on her. On her escorted trip in to Fluffy Springs, she was surrounded by brown fluffies. Now? None! They were all different colors, just like she had seen in the city. Reds, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, purples, some graying, but only of those colors. She knew that the brown fluffies were there, but... where were they?

SKY, she asked her dinner partner, WHEWE AM BWOWN FWUFFIES? NO NUMMIES FOW DEM?

Sky was chewing on some leafy greens. He shook his head. THE BROWNS ARE OFF DOING THEIR PART TO KEEP THE HERD SAFE. LEGGIES WITH LEGGIES, WINGIES WITH WINGIES, EYES WITH EYES. THEY ALL EAT AT DIFFERENT TIMES. THEY ARE ALL AROUND RIGHT NOW MAKING SURE NOTHING DANGEROUS COMES WITHOUT BEING SEEN. BEING BROWN MEANS THE FLUFFY AM GOOD AT HIDING. SO THEY LEARN TO KEEP THE HERD SAFE.

He finished up his little pile and the fluffy conversation took him around the group. Little discussions on the day and about what needed to be fixed or done the next day. She heard snippets here and there while she watched the others eat. Soon, everybody's little pile was done and Sky stepped into the middle of the fluffy dinner circle.

FLUFFIES! NOW FOR NEWS. WE HAVE A VISITOR AS YOU CAN SEE. WHITE FLUFFY, CAN YOU COME HERE?

She stood up and walked slowly into the middle, every fluffy eye set upon her.

THIS AM WHITE FLUFFY. SHE HAS COME FROM FAR AWAY, FROM THE BIG CITY. AND SHE BRINGS NEWS.

Sky turned to the older fluffies that sat next to the families.

ROSE? he asked, CAN YOU COME HERE?

A red fluffy hopped slowly into the middle of the circle. White noticed that a back leggie was missing and the red fluffy's eyes were cast downward and sad. Sky hugged Rose.

ROSE, THIS WILL GIVE YOU HEART HURTIES, BUT I NEED YOU TO LISTEN. WHITE FLUFFY? CAN YOU TELL THE STORY OF THE FLUFFY YOU CALL APPLE?

With this Rose's head jerked up, and looked at Sky with tears forming in her eyes. Sky put a hoof gently on Rose's shoulders and closed his eyes as he muzzled her close for a hug. He opened his eyes, kept a hoof around Rose, then looked to white.

PLEASE WHITE. TELL US ABOUT APPLE.

She grew a little nervous. She started in and talked about how her mother gave special hugs for food. Apple was one who would pay. The last time she’d seen him, Apple stepped on one baby and then her mother mentioned Fluffy Springs in a fit of anger, sending Apple into a rage. He made the tummy babies come out of her mother by pushing on her tummy too hard. Then he pulled the head off of her little brother before declaring that he was going to come to kill every baby in Fluffy Springs with his herd of toughies.

The Fluffy Springs herd sat in silence. Rose had tears falling from her eyes and appeared to only be still standing up by the strength of Sky.

Sky looked at the white fluffy again. WHITE FLUFFY, THANK YOU. ANOTHER QUESTION, ONE YOU ALREADY TOLD OAK. WHAT DID APPLE LOOK LIKE?

Rose opened her eyes wide and stared at the white fluffy, desperation in her eyes. White could tell there was some glimmer of hope in those kind eyes. She also had the sinking feeling that she was about to destroy what little hope that Rose had growing.

Yeah, she’s about to be crushed completely.

White hesitated then recited what she'd told the older brown earlier. APPEW AM WED WIF WIGHT BWOWN MANE AND TAIW. WIKE OWD APPEW DAT ... AM OWD.

She looked at Sky who nodded to continue. HE HAB WOTS OF WHITE DOTS ON BOF HEAW PWACES.

The hope died from Rose, even as such a deceased emotion that it was already, and was taken into the heavens by Rose's lamenting wail. The red fluffy sobbed and shook.

BABBEH! Rose cried, PWEASE! PWEASE APPEW BE GOOD BABBEH! NO BE BAD BABBEH NO MOWE! PWEASE! NO HUWT MUMMAH AN' FWIENDS!

She collapsed away from Sky's embrace throwing herself to the ground. Tears made a little river down the mare's face, and it reminded the white fluffy of the little trickle of water that was under the tree she had been in earlier.

Had the mountain been crying too?

Sky gestured outside the fluffy circle and two brown fluffies came out of their hiding spots and into the center. They helped Rose up and walked her out of the circle. They didn't stop at the other fluffies but continued on a ways, and she saw the three fluffies go into a little house on the edge of the meadow. Sky was watching as well. He spoke after the fluffy was out of sight.

WHITE FLUFFY, THANK YOU. THAT WAS APPLE'S MOTHER, OF COURSE.

He turned to her. ROSE HAD LOTS OF TUMMY BABIES. BUT... EACH YEAR HER BABY CAME OUT ALREADY FOREVER SLEEPIES. MANY, MANY TIMES. BUT ONE WARM TIME, ONE BABY DIDN'T HAVE FOREVER SLEEPIES.

AND HE WAS RED, WITH A LITTLE BROWN.

He addressed the crowd of fluffies in a loud and stern voice!

BABIES DO NOT GET NAMES UNTIL THEY ARE GROWN AND HAVE EARNED A NAME. THIS IS THE HERD'S WAY.

Then addressing the white fluffy, a little more quietly, APPLE DID NOT EARN HIS NAME. ROSE WAS SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE A CHIRPY BABY! BUT SHE WAS STILL SCARED HE WOULD NOT LIVE. SO SHE DID ALL SHE COULD FOR HIM, BREAKING HERD RULES. THAT DID NOT GO WELL. HE DID WHAT HE WANTED. THE HERD LEADER TOLD THE RED BABY THAT HE WOULD NOT GET A NAME UNTIL HE WAS A GOOD FLUFFY.

THE RED BABY WAS GIVEN WHAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE. BUT ROSE GAVE HIM A NAME ANYWAY IN SECRET. AND LIKE HIS NAME, LEFT ALONE ON THE GROUND AND NOT TAKEN CARE OF, APPLE BECAME ROTTEN. HE STARTED SHOWING SMARTY TO THE HERD. HE HURT HIS FATHER WHO WENT FOREVER SLEEPIES AND TRIED TO HAVE SPECIAL HUGS WITH ROSE, HIS OWN MOTHER. SHE REFUSED.

Sky took a deep breath and continued. HE KICKED HER LEG AND IT BECAME BAD. DOWN IN THE CITY, A HUMAN TAKES CARE OF HUMAN ANIMALS. HE ... HELPED ROSE.

SHE ALMOST WENT FOREVER SLEEPIES.

The crowd murmured and Sky looked across them until they quieted.

SMARTIES ARE NOT GOOD FOR THE HERD. THEY CAUSE A LOT OF HURT.

SO...

WE DID THE SMARTY DANCE.

The fluffies all lowered their heads quietly.

White asked, SMAWTY DANCE?

Sky looked to her. WE SAY A BAD FLUFFY IS THE SMARTY. WE DO WHAT HE SAYS. FOR A TIME.

He looked down to the ground, avoiding her questioning eyes. THEN, WE START DOING DUMMY THINGS. THE SMARTY GETS ANGRY. WE START SAYING THAT SMART FLUFFIES GO TO THE CITY. HE SHOULD GO THERE AND HAVE A LARGE SMARTY HERD INSTEAD OF US DUMMY FLUFFIES.

Sky looked up, staring eastwards. SO THEY GO. FLAPPY MONSTERS USUALLY GET THEM QUICK. SOME MAKE IT PAST THE FLAPPY MONSTER HOUSIES THOUGH. MOST THEN TRY TO CROSS THE LONG BLACK ROCK AND GET NUMMED BY A METAL MONSTER. THE REST ... GO FOREVER SLEEPIES BECAUSE OF NO NUMMIES OR WATER.

A tear fell to the ground from Sky's face. THESE FLUFFIES GO BECAUSE WE TRICK OUR OWN CHILD INTO LEAVING AND IT MAKES US HAVE HEART HURTIES. A murmur of agreement from all around arose.

BUT APPLE MADE IT. OUR WINGIES AND EYES TOLD US HE DID. BUT, HE WAS IN THE CITY. HE WAS... AWAY FROM US. AND SADLY, HE CONTINUED HIS BAD BABY WAYS. FOR THAT, I AM SORRY. SORRY ONE OF US HAS CAUSED YOU PAIN. AND TAKEN FROM YOU WHAT LITTLE YOU HAD.

NOW YOU COME. WITH NEWS THAT HE WANTS TO COME BACK.

Sky looked directly into her eyes. I THINK HE WILL. OUR TROUBLE WE GAVE TO THE WORLD COMES BACK TO US, LIKE A SEED GROWING AND GIVING FRUIT.

White's heart started to race! If she made it back and Apple was so much more stronger than she was, then that meant...

She spun around, looking from bush to bush, waiting to see the eyes of Apple boring into her! She flitted one way and the other, then felt a strong hoof on her shoulders.

WHITE, Sky said, CALM DOWN. APPLE IS NOT HERE. HE IS STILL IN THE CITY. THE EYES ARE WATCHING FOR HIM.

Sky then laughed. OAK BELIEVES THAT APPLE WILL NOT BE HERE UNTIL NEXT HOT TIME. WE HAVE TIME.

White looked at Sky unbelieving. BUT, APPEW AM STWONG! APPEW WIWW COME FAST WIF WOTS OF TUFFIES!

Sky shook his head. APPLE DID NOT WALK THE WAY YOU DID. HE FOLLOWED THE BLACK ROCK FAR UP TO ANOTHER HUMAN PLACE, THEN BACK DOWN TO THE CITY. HE WILL TAKE TWICE AS LONG AT LEAST.

White thought back. The human magic she'd seen before she left the city! The nice man told her to follow the brown road, not the long black rock! Apple had gone far up then down. He'd walked farther and didn't know to walk straight across!

She was confused again. WHY APPEW NO TAKE BWOWN WOAD? WHY TAKE WONG BWACK WOCK?

Sky shrugged. SMARTIES THINK THEY ARE SMART AND KNOW IT ALL. NOBODY HELPED HIM. AND EVEN IF THEY DID, HE WOULDN'T LISTEN. SMARTIES DON'T LEARN.

White shuffled her hooves nervously. WHITE NEBAH ASK FOW HEWP. HEWP JUS’... CAME.

Sky smiled. BY BEING GOOD, ONE DOES NOT NEED TO ASK. HELP COMES ANYWAY. JUST LIKE YOU. HELP CAME. YOU CAME. AND THAT HAS EARNED YOU YOUR NAME.

White snapped to attention. FWUFFY HAB NAME?! she exclaimed.

Sky nodded, YES.

WHAT AM NAME!? she squeed.

Sky laughed. NOT TODAY! TOMORROW IS THE NAMING. WHITE FLUFFY AM WHITE FLUFFY FOR ONE MORE DAY.

She sat down dejectedly.

Sky nuzzled her. DON'T BE SAD. IT IS JUST ONE MORE DAY. NOW! COME TELL YOUR STORY TO THE OTHERS. IT WILL MAKE A GOOD BEDTIME STORY.

It did.

FosterFluffy: If they have winter to prepare they should. I bet Apple managed to recruit a bunch of visceral street trash scavangers willing to pillage Fluffy Springs.

Such a secluded little town too. I wonder if their amicable relationship with fluffies is enough of curiosity for it to be a little bit of a touristy thing.
