Fluffy Springs Saga
Chapter 33

Wednesday, April 13

The long days of winter had continued and the Fluffy Springs herd lived quietly to themselves. Little trips down to the town were made by a few fluffies but the vast majority spent the hard cold times outside in relative comfort and safety inside their valley. The hot springs continued flowing even in the deepest of wintery weather, passing water through the ancient yet simple heat exchanger that keept the big fluffy barn warm. With a well fed herd and fluff well-kept and free from the trash and caked on caca of a normal feral, several of the members would waddle out to their unused summer houses that dotted the meadow just to stay at a comfortable temperature and cool down. During the long, frigid nights, they would all wander back into the safety of the big house and the fluff pile that formed at sunset.

Stories were told, humorous and fanciful tales about wondrous trees that had the most delicious of foods weighing the branches to within the grasp of even the smallest among the herd. Lessons, instructions, and educational songs were repeated, ensuring that the knowledge of the herd was retained and freshly instilled into every biotoy within earshot. The brown fluffies would go over their memorized trails, where each turn was, where the caches of nummies were located, which streams of sparkling mountain water were the best and the sounds of the mountains. Snow spent the winter along with all the other yearlings absorbing every tidbit of wisdom that the herd knew by heart. When she looked back at that time, she was certain it was the second best time of her life.

But as every dark time has its bright side, so did the end of winter start to show itself. Little red bellied flappy monsters reappeared, the cold stream lost the constant crust of snow white ice, and the trees and bushes began to sprout little green shoots. The excitement of the herd grew along with the plants.

The Fluffy Feast approached!

Snow had heard a lot about it, as everybody excitedly and constantly explained the event to her and her first year peers. There was a big meal in the afternoon to celebrate the ending of the cold times. They would eat lots of different nummies that they couldn't grow in their little spot of forest, buying them from the humans in Harvey Springs. It was a big event for the humans too, and they'd come up with their food, bringing the grey fluffies in their metal monsters and would all celebrate spring together. After the main meal was a special treat, but Snow couldn't get any of the adults in the herd to tell her what that was! The rumors among the young ranged from a massive fruit the size of a full set of leggies of fluffies to the choosing of a new leader by combat! None of the other fluffies that had been born that year knew anything, and the adults kept it a big secret. Each stallion and his mare would nuzzle a little bit at any inquiry as to what it actually was, sharing some secret joke between them, but they all kept mum. It was driving her and her friends crazy with anticipation!

She'd cornered Sky more than once about the secret surprise, but he always managed to change the subject to the fluffy dance afterwards, where the new herd members became special friends.

That bothered Snow.

She couldn't dance. And wasn't sure she wanted a special friend.

THAT DOESN'T MATTER, Sky had said, I'M SURE YOU'LL GET A SPECIAL FRIEND. SOME FLUFFY WILL SHOW YOU THE DANCE MOVES. YOU ALREADY KNOW THEM. Then he snickered, and said, JUST ASK ACORN.

So she had asked him. But whenever she did ask Acorn, he always had to go someplace in a hurry. Or managed to lose the ability to speak. Or fell over a rock. Or a root. Or a leaf. He really was starting to become quite clumsy. So she never did learn to dance before the big day came and had resigned herself to the fact that she wasn't going to dance. She was accustomed to being alone so what did it really matter in the end?

When she complained to Sky that she couldn't get Acorn to help her, Sky just shook his head and told her she'd already won.

WON? Snow asked, WON WHAT?

Yet Sky would only smile slyly, and say, MORE THAN YOU KNOW. She thought more than once that he certainly was frustrating with his mysteries.

Given the disappointment over not learning to dance, she wasn't as enthusiastic as some of the other yearlings. But she was very excited when she was picked to be part of the fruit crew. Led by Maple, the first year fluffies Snow, Cherry, and Lemon made their way down to the nummies house in the town. Maple had a little bag of munnies hung around her neck that the fluffies had saved up over the year since the last feast. They were in a little grassy spot between the long black rock and the big black rock in front of the nummies store when Maple sounded the alarm!

WUN, FWUFFIES! she screamed, IT AM BIG FWAPPY MONSTAH!

Lemon and Cherry promptly shat themselves and ducked for cover under a bush with only the hint of future leaves, shaking the branches furiously with their fear. Snow jumped next to a big white rock with a tall metal tree on it and scanned the skies for the menace.

She couldn't see it!

Panic! And then she looked to Maple to see where the older fluffy had hid, and if she was alright, and if she could point out where the flappy monster was lurking.

Maple hadn't moved from the spot in the soft grass, grinning the best and as wide as a fluffy could.

Snow whispered, MAPUH? WHEWE AM FWAPPY MONSTAH?

Maple chuckled. NO MONSTAH. JUS' NEEDED TO EMPTY OUT THOSE TWO, pointing to the two young fluffies cowering under their inadequate shelter. A streak of liquid brown traced their path from where Maple's call had come to where the two young fluffies were.

Snow cocked her head confused. Maple chuckled again as the two yearlings left their poor hiding spot to join her and Snow once again, lower intestines cleaned out. MAPLE HAS REASONS, was all she said and walked once again towards the entrance of the store.

Once there, she directed all of her little group to step onto a soft black rock, and with the weight of all four fluffies on the pad, human magic opened the door to the nummies store!

Two small "pherts" were all that came out from behind the yellow and red fluffies at the awesome display of the magic power of humans!

Maple strode forward with three stunned youths behind her who delayed long enough to nearly get their tails caught in the automatic door as it closed. A small ding-dong had chimed when the door opened and from behind the counter a man with a massive black-as-night mustache looked up from his morning's paper. His head was as bald as his face was fluffy!

"Ah," he said, "Good to see you Maple! Sky sent word down that you were coming. Going to be a great day for a picnic!"

IT IS, IT IS! Maple replied, then turned to the three fluffies. YOU FWEE GO LOOK 'WOUND. SEE IF YOU SEE ANYTHING SPESHUL! MAPLE GONNA GET DA NUMMIES. And with that, Maple and the clerk walked over towards a long glass counter with all kinds of pink and red blockies, while Snow took the time to walk around the little store. She recognized some of the foods from her childhood in the city. But most of it was completely foreign to her. She and the entourage turned a corner and Snow shuddered.

It was an entire aisle of bread. The look of it made her stomach churn, remembering the horrid things her mother would do for just a small bit of the foul food, and here it was in droves. She quickly scurried to the next aisle, with two confused fluffies following closely behind.

"Maple, I've got it all cut up. Pineapples, mangoes, bananas, and all the oranges."

Maple had been picked up and placed on top of the cashier's spot, and was looking over all the containers. YUP, DESE LOOK REAL GOOD, MAWTIN! JUS' NEED MY HEWPAHS. HEY! YOU THWEE! SEE ANYTHING GOOD?

Snow had made it down the canned good aisle, and was shaking her head furiously, the sight of all the food her mother craved so often still haunting her.

Lemon and Cherry were a little different. They'd seen it. It was uncooked, but the picture on the front was unmistakable.

Sketties!

They both started quickly talking at once, even though neither biotoy had ever had any. It was just... known. Maple looked on in confusion, trying to decipher what each was talking about.

QUIET! SIT! she finally bellowed from her place up high, and three little fluffy butts hit the floor obediently.

SKETTIES, YOU SAY? the light golden brown fluffy pondered. WELL, IF YOU AM GOOD FWUFFIES, DEN MAYBE YOU GET SKETTIES TONIGHT!

She and Martin both gave a little chuckle.

Lemon and Cherry stood and started spinning around Snow so quickly that they became an orange blur! Snow stuck a hind hoof out just enough to separate them back into a heap of their primary colors, although a display rack holding puffy bags with funny pictures of nummies on them rocked a bit from the impact of the two shitrats. But nothing fell, and all seemed well with the world.

CAN'T TAKE YOU TWO ANYWHEAH, said Maple giving the wan-upsies sign to Martin. To Snow's surprise, he gently lifted her down without even a hug. That didn't seem to faze the leader of the little nummies troop at all however.

NOW, she said, YOU THREE FWUFFIES LINE UP! YOU NO AM HERE TO PWAY!

With that, they lined up in front of the magically opening door and the shop clerk lowered pairs of bags down to Maple, who strapped them across her young charges, saddle-bag style, until each fluffy was loaded up with as much fruit as they could carry. Maple indicated to the little pouch that weighed her neck down.

MAWTIN, COULD YOU PWEASE? she cooed, MAPLE'S FINGAHS HAB WUN AWAY 'GAIN! holding up her hooves as if to illustrate.

Both she and Martin laughed at the little joke. He removed the bag from around her head, counted out the bills and coins, and then put the rest back in the bag.

"Have a good one, Maple!" he waved, "and I'll see you all this afternoon after I close early!"

Maple waved back, her load lighter than when she arrived, but the three fluffies falling in line behind her much laden down. The smell was getting to Lemon, who had two rivulets of moisture running down her mouth fluff.

WET'S GO! said Maple, urging her mules forward and they made the arduous walk back to Fluffy Springs, fruit acquired! Along the way, Maple shouted out greetings to a small metal monster that Snow was familiar with. It had a big mouth on the back pointed to the sky, and she'd seen more than one barky monster riding back there. But this one was different as it was filled with all the grey fluffies from the city housie. The grey fluffies all waved at the nummie expedition, except for Deep who was waving to the wrong side of the road.

Maple sighed. MUST BE NICE TO WIDE BACK UP. She kept walking ahead of the three struggling yearlings trailing behind her.

When the four arrived back in Fluffy Springs, the place had changed so much from when they left in the morning! Humans were there! They were setting up tables and chairs, stringing colorful strings of bright colors along each of the houses and up to the main house. Snow had never seen anything like it! Even Maple looked excited!

Snow could see the human tables were already being filled with all kinds of nummies that the humans had brought. The smells were wonderful, but Maple had orders for them. OKAY YOU THREE! she barked, and pointed to the large fluffy sized table set up in the middle. GO PUT DA FWUIT OVER DERE, THEN GO TO THE BIG HOUSE. OTHER BABBEHS ALREADY DONE. Lemon and Cherry groaned. Snow wasn't quite sure why.

Maple helped take the bags off of Lemon, then Cherry, and the duo walked towards the open door of the main house. Maple then turned to Snow as she was unpacked. FOWGOT TO ASK IF YOU KNEW, SNOW. YOU NEED TO GO TO SEE DA HUMAN DOCTAH! HE HEWPS FWUFFIES. GIBS THEM LITTLE OWIES SO DEY DON' GET BIG OWIES LATER. Maple looked Snow right in the eyes.

IT'S OKAY. EVERY FLUFFY HERE GETS THEM. IT HURTS ONLY FOR A LITTLE TIME AND THE DOCTOR'S WITTLE GUWL GIB YOU HUGGIES AFTAH! Maple drifted away for a second, lost in a memory, then gently sighed. GUESS SHE AM NO SO WITTLE ANYMOW. BUT STILL. GOOD HUGGIES. And with that, shooed the little white filly off to the main house.

When Snow got there, Cherry was sniffling hard, and had obviously been crying but it looked like the hug worked. Snow looked up at the man that had Lemon up on a little table and was talking to her, and gave a little start at his appearance. He was almost as white as she was, and his fluff was nearly as red.

Something about that bugged her.

"And do you know who your father is yet?" Lemon, jaw clenched tightly, shook her head. "You're Maple's foal this year, yes?" Lemon nodded, mouth firmly shut. Someone behind the man was typing. "Ah, no matter. I'll ask Maple later."

He turned around to the person behind him, and said, "Sweetie, mark that entry as open so I remember to update it."

"Okay, Dad", said the girl who mirrored her father's appearance, albeit in a ponytail rather than the short scarlet he wore. She picked up a syringe that was lying next to Lemon. She stroked Lemon's head twice, and in a comforting voice said, "This'll hurt a little, but it'll keep you from getting ill, okay?" And with that Lemon started backing away from her.

But then quickly, the girl snapped her fingers to the left of Lemon's face, then to the right, and Lemon got a confused look on her face as she quickly turned at each startling sound.

The girl placed the now empty syringe with the others, and smiled at the yellow fluffy. "All done! Now, that wasn't so bad was it?"

Comprehension finally dawned on Lemon's face as the fading pain of a pin prick between her shoulders finally made a belated appearance.

NO! Lemon exclaimed, DAT NO AM HUWTIES AT AWW! Then her face appeared crestfallen a bit. DAT MEAN NO HUGGIES? she looked up sadly.

The girl laughed and swept the yellow fluffy into her arms! "No, silly! You still get your huggies!" and she gently squeezed the fluffy. A look of pure bliss flowed out from Lemon, and it looked like every muscle in her body relaxed at once.

The man laughed and pointed at the table. "You've got a weird way of getting your random stool samples."

"Gotta finish my experiments, Dad. And fresh samples are always better."

Lemon didn't seem to hear any of the conversation, so lost in the hug that she was, and only came around when she was placed back down on the ground next to Cherry, softly getting the sniffles under control.

BIG BABBEH, said Lemon, who then waddled her way outside to the noisy festivities. Cherry stood and slowly followed.

Before Snow realized it, the man had bent down and picked her up. The girl had scooped up Lemon's relaxed emissions into a bag with some writing on it, then turned to face the computer.

Snow was scared a little, and more or less froze on the hard surface. The man put a light into her eyes, and looked in her ears, while her heart started pounding away.

"Sky tells me your name is Snow, and you've got quite the tale, I hear?"

Snow unfroze at this, unsure of why that mattered, and so swung her red tail in front of her to get a good look at it. WEAWWY? Snow said. TAIW AM GOOD TAIW, she concluded after investigating it a bit more closely than normal.

The man laughed and shook his head. "No, tale as in story, not tail as in, like, well, what you've got there in your hands. Hooves. Sky says you had quite the adventure coming up from Tennat City. You'll have to tell me all about it at the feast." He popped his head over his daughter's shoulder and spoke a few numbers at her who dutifully typed them in.

"Alright, let's see. So Snow, do you know who your father is?"

Snow hung her head. SNOW DON' KNOW. ONWY KNOW MUMMAH.

"That's okay, we didn't really expect that. Urban ferals have that issue quite a bit. Let's go to your mother. Did your mother have a name?"

Snow nodded. SNOW MUMMAH NAME AM SPWUCIE.

The girl spun around, and the man had an alert look on his face. He cleared his throat. "Did you say Sprucie?"

Snow nodded again. YES. SPWUCIE. SHE NO AM NICE TO WHITE FWUFFY BABBEH. MUMMAH SAY FWUFFY BABBEH AM UGWEE KEWWY BABBEH. BUT SNOW DON' KNOW WHAT KEWWY BABBEH AM. JUS' AM FWUFFY. MUMMAH GO FOWEBAH SWEEPIES THO. BUT MUMMAH TEWW BABBEH GO FWUFFY SPWINGS, SABE FWUFFY SPWINGS, SO SNOW GO TO FWUFFY SPWINGS.

The girl took a step towards Snow and got down face to face with her on the portable examination table.

"Snow," she said, "did your mommy have bluish green fluff, a light brown mane, and wings?

Snow looked to the girl's green eyes. YES! MUMMAH AWWAYS SAY, WAN FWY KEWWY, WAN FWY, BUT BABBEH NO KNOW WHY. MUMMAHS WINGS NEBAH WET HEW FWY.

Tears formed in the girls eyes. "I know why, little one. I know why." She lifted Snow up into the air above her head, spun in a little pirouette, then brought the fluffy down into a gentle hug and the two met gazes again.

"I know why. I'm Kellie!"
